Heaven. The definition of heaven is: "The abode of God, the angels, and the spirits of the righteous after death; the place or state of existence of the blessed after the mortal life." There are so many different teachings about heaven. There are many references to heaven in the Bible, a few of these are:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am. You know the place where I am going. Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (John 14:1-5)
“Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
“No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” (I Corinthians 2:9)
There are many questions and ideas about heaven and many books and articles about heaven too. In the book “A Better Country, Preparing for Heaven” by Dan Schaeffer, the author shares that years ago Barbara Walters wrote an article about heaven trying to answer questions such as: “What is heaven like and who gets to go there?” She acknowledged in her study that most of us, regardless of our religious persuasion, do not think that life ends here. “We simply do not believe that this life is all there is.” We will read and discuss a variety of books that cover many heavenly topics. Our study will be guided by the Living Luther article and study guide titled “By the Light of Grace...How does the ELCA understand heaven and hell?” by ELCA pastor and seminary professor Dr. Timothy Wengert.
